What is Microsoft SQL Server?
Microsoft SQL server is a database server developed by the Microsoft Corporation. It is mainly used to fetch the data requested by any other software from the data stored in the server itself. The software, which requests the, data from the server, could be on the same computer or either could be located away on a different computer connected remotely via the internet.
Microsoft SQL is designed to help with the workload of a wide range of audiences from small application based organization to large and vast data processing organizations which have a number of computer units to retrieve and access the data on servers.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005
Microsoft SQL 2005 a.k.a. Yukon was launched in October 2005 by the Microsoft Corporation. This version was the successor of the Microsoft SQL 2000. Obviously, it consisted of some advanced and extra features which the preceding version didn’t have.
Some common features of Microsoft SQL 2005 included support for the XML data management and relational data management. For error handling, the Microsoft SQL 2005 was supported with the try-catch procedure. It had better syntax and indexing algorithms.
Microsoft SQL Server 2008
Microsoft SQL 2008 was launched after the Microsoft SQL 2005 in August 2008 which was developed to provide near-zero downtime and the data management process to be self organizing and self-maintaining.
A unique aspect of this version was its in-built support for media files as well which include the audio files, video files and pictures etc. The media were stored as BLOB’s in a sequence of bits. Various other data-types such as specific data types were included in it which equipped it with multiple functions.
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 a.k.a. Kilimanjaro was launched in the year 2010. Some new features added to the previous version led to the development this server. Master Data services and management, a multi-functioning central management system and various other kinds of functions for the data management were the key elements of the Microsoft SQL 2008 R2.
With support, for MS Excel by the use of Power Pivot and Report Builder 3.0 the users were able to use an in-built data-tier model for the packaging.
Microsoft SQL Server 2012
Microsoft SQL 2012 is going to be the latest server that the Microsoft Corporation will be launching in the year 2012. Codenamed as Denali, this product of Microsoft is announced to the last version of all the Microsoft SQL servers to support OLE DB. The exact release date hasn’t been disclosed yet.
Basically, all types of Microsoft SQL servers are used for broad functions such as the storage of the data and retrieval and alteration of the data stored on these servers.
On a small scale, the data may not be that large, but on a large scale, the organizations need to manage a large amount of data for which these servers are used. For all types of storing and accessing of data, a query language is used in them.
